2024 Summer CampsGreetings Students & Parents~
As we look forward to summer and the upcoming school year, we are proud of our incredible roster of MiM! students and thankful for the opportunity to continue sharing the joy of teaching and learning mathematics together. Information about Summer Intensives and Math Camps at our Math is Magic! school house in Eugene are listed below. If you have a student preparing for a class not listed, just let me know via text and we will do our best to create more learning opportunities as needed. In addition to the camps and intensives, our fantastic team will also be offering private lessons throughout the summer for those filling gaps, enriching their education, preparing for next year or just doing math for fun :) Space is limited and classes will be filled on first-come basis so please register asap. Priority is given to students currently in our roster, then will open to new students who express interest. Camps are designed according to level and learning style, not only by age, so grade levels given are just a guideline. To register for all intensives and camps: Please text me at (541)517-4179. If you are not currently in our roster, I will offer an initial assessment session with me and guidance on the appropriate camp for your student. The cost of this assessment is $75 with sliding scale available by request. This summer, there is again the possibility of classes being offered on full scholarship through the district for 4j students who have current student id numbers, but we won’t likely know for sure until late May. Please include your student’s 4J id number if you’re interested in possibly receiving scholarship from the district, should it manifest. The cost of each camp will be $300 for non-scholarship students. In addition, if you’re interested in providing a scholarship for other students, that is always hugely appreciated; our scholarship fund gets put to very good use by deserving students. Thanks to our incredible roster of generous parents and benefactors past and present, as yet, we’ve not had to turn away any student due to financial ability and we hope to continue. IMPORTANT: Once I have confirmed your student’s placement, please REGISTER by mailing or dropping a check in the locking mailbox on the porch at Math is Magic! 1325 Jefferson Street, Eugene, OR 97402. Be sure to include 1. student’s name 2. Camp name and exact camp dates on the memo line. Once payment is received, you will receive confirmation of registration via text. If the district does offer scholarships for 4J students, payments will be refunded. MATH CAMPS & INTENSIVES A.M.E. LEVEL 1: July 22, 23, 24, 25 8:30 am-11:30 pm This class will set the foundations for building higher understanding by delving into the ocean of number theory. We will explore the properties that govern whole numbers and how base systems are built, including the history and structure of our own. Target grades: 2-4 A.M.E. LEVEL 2: July 22,23,24,25 12 noon - 3 pm Designed for students who are ready to explore the relationships of rational numbers. We will explore the world of all numbers from integers to imaginary. We’ll include sequences, identities, probability, functions and life on the coordinate plane. Target grades: 5-7 QUADRATICS INTENSIVE: Aug 12,13, 14, 15 9 am - 11:30 am We will fully illuminate this conic section: simplifying, factoring, graphing, solving and applications. We’ll prove the quadratic formula, not just memorize it. This is an excellent opportunity for advanced learners and students who are headed into Algebra 1,2 or PreCalc and need to solidify this important concept. GEOMETRY LOGIC & PROOF: Aug 12, 13,14, 15 12 noon - 2:30 pm We’ll review core algebra techniques used in geometric applications, learn formal proof, definitions, postulates & theorems, adjusting visual perception to see the beauty of the first 4 dimensions. SAT INTENSIVE: Aug 12, 13,14,15 3 pm - 5:30 pm This is built for students who will take college entrance exams this year. We’ll learn to unravel the mysteries of the test using specific strategies, methods and content mastery for the new digital style exam. Course books provided at $30 each. A.M.E. FOR ALGEBRA 1: Aug 19, 20, 21, 22 9 am -11:30 am For those who are ready for the math of generalization: We begin with an intensive review of Pre-Algebra concepts, including fractions/decimals/percents, proportions, inequalities, absolute value, integers, and move on to properties of equality, variable substitution, simplifying algebraic expressions, solving equations & graphing linear functions. LGEBRA 2: Aug 19, 20, 21, 22 12 noon - 2:30 pm Second year algebra is notoriously fast-paced and we will boot up the algebraic method, solidify first year concepts, introduce the family of functions and transformations in the plane. Exponents, logarithms, polynomials, radicals, non-linear inequalities, and trigonometry are all part of the curriculum. STATISTICS: Aug 19, 20, 21, 22 3 pm- 5:30 pm Population inference and sampling methods are the cornerstones of data analysis. We will study measures of center and dispersement, linear regression, probability distributions, confidence intervals and tests of significance. PRE CALCULUS & IB MATH: Aug 26, 27, 28, 29 9:30 am-12 noon This course will bring together all of the maths studied so far, strengthening the complete algebraic method, non-linear inequalities, sequences & series, advanced system solving as well as review of polynomials, exponents and logarithms, domain, range, trigonometry and graphical transformations. TI -84 plus CE graphing calculators will be used. It’s recommended that students have personal calculators. CALCULUS LIMITS AND INFINITESSIMALS: Aug 26, 27, 28, 29 12:30 - 3 pm Introduction to limits, continuity and the definition of the derivative, basic rules of differentiation and Advanced Placement prep. Ideal for students taking both levels of Calculus next year, as well as those preparing for college courses. |
